Gentle Hatha Yoga

This class is ideal for beginners and those experienced practitioners who would like to slow down their practice.  Class is taught in the Hatha Yoga style, moving slowly and with purpose and attention to alignment, and holding positions for a number of breaths.  Class incorporates the principles of Ayurveda into the practice, recognizing the elements and qualities most prevalent in each season and selecting practices to help support the balance of these elements within us. Class will include meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), asana (postures), and savasana (relaxation), and will include postures for building strength, balance, and flexibility, as well as improving vital energy (prana) flow.  Through the experience of breath, gentle exertion, and focus, individuals will practice to enhance their overall sense of peace, balance, and connection.

Slow Flow Vinyasa Yoga (moderate intensity level)
This class is a moderate, but invigorating flow of asana linked with breath.  It is moderately paced, allowing time to settle into the proper alignment for each pose and is structured to promote energy flow, gentle cleansing, and fluidity of movement, helping the body to be balanced in flexibility and strength. Vinyasa, or breath synchronized movement, is a beautiful way to reconnect with your natural rhythm, as well as to cleanse and revitalize your being as a whole. The principles of Ayurveda are incorporated into the practice, recognizing the elements and qualities most prevalent in each season and selecting practices to help support the balance of these elements within us. Participants should be prepared for continuous movement up and down on the mat. Class includes asana (posture), pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation and relaxation and is recommended for the mildly experienced yoga practitioner or the beginner who is body aware and has some familiarity with asana (posture).

Yin Yoga (gentle intensity level)

This class, taught in the Yin style, brings more focus and awareness to the joints and dense connective tissues of the body, as opposed to the more Yang style of practice where we bring more emphasis to the muscles. Poses are set up to be held for longer durations (anywhere from 2-5 minutes in length) and they are designed to create healthy stresses for the yin tissues of the body, including the bones, joints and fascia, to encourage the strengthening, remodeling and overall healthy functioning of these tissues. Props may be utilized to support the body in these longer holds to maintain an appropriate level of sensation and comfort. Some of the physical benefits that are thought to be supported by Yin Yoga are detoxification of the tissues, prevention of contracture (loss of mobility in a joint), prevention of bone degeneration, reduction of joint fixation, an increase in hydration of these dense tissues, and maintenance of the structural integrity of the spine. The longer holds in this form allow for more meditative space within the practice, offering ample time to steady and unwind the mind.

This form of practice is an excellent balance to our very active "yang" lifestyle in this culture, providing the very important opportunity to slow down and cultivate space once again, for body, mind and heart.

All levels are welcome to participate and experience the steady and unique quality of opening into oneself that can be offered through the Yin Yoga experience.
